Key filing season dates for 2021 tax returns (filed in 2022)

There are several important dates taxpayers should keep in mind for this year's filing season:

  • January 24. IRS Free File opens. Taxpayers can begin filing returns through Free File partners.

  • February 15. Projected date for the beginning of processing tax returns for filers with children.

  • April 18. Deadline for filing 2021 tax returns.

  • October 15. Deadline to file for those requesting an extension on their 2021 tax returns.  I  just need to know you want one and I can file it for you, no signature or other requirements needed.

Yes they managed to make it confusing except for the FAQ section, which is too vague and doesn't include all the but's, if's and such.  The jest of it is, they need to write a brand new 941 before employers can get their tax credit (places like restaurants who are open for take out only will qualify easily eventually) and they need to do a ton of computer programming before they can issue the Stimulus checks (or the direct deposit of same).  The forgivable business loans will require the banks and SBA to adapt their application to include those that would otherwise be excluded.  However, as I understand it, the forgivable loans won't be available to those without a profit (no idea which year or years).

The same goes for the State Unemployment Agency and their ability to accept more then the normal claims.  The biggest change being that they will allow those self employed to file if their business was closed due to the 'stay at home' order.  This includes anyone who got a 1099 or otherwise files a Schedule C, Partnerships, and various other as yet unexplained specifically as qualified.  This will take time.  It is definitely not ready right now.

Tomorrow?  Probably not.  Later this week or next week?  Maybe.  Sometime after that, yep.

That link above at the IRS will be updated when all these things (other then state unemployment) will be ready to go.
The web page for the state unemployment is http://www.michigan.gov/uia Go there for updates on anything unemployment.

04-12-2020 edit:  Self-Employed, Other Newly Eligible Workers Can Apply for Unemployment on Monday,
$600 Federal Payments Also Begin to Unemployment recipients.
Federal $1,200 stimulus checks will begin being direct deposited now as well.
